Skills
You will never finish learning someone’s culture. That is the point.
Checklists of customs promise mastery. Cultural humility starts from the opposite place: the other person is the expert on their own life.

The short answer
Cultural humility is a lifelong practice of self-reflection, openness to others’ perspectives and attention to power imbalances. Physicians Melanie Tervalon and Jann Murray-García introduced the term in 1998 for medical training, contrasting it with cultural competence, which can imply that culture is a body of knowledge you can master. Humility treats each person as the authority on their own identity.
Three commitments
Tervalon and Murray-García describe cultural humility through ongoing commitments.
- Lifelong self-reflection and self-critique.
- Addressing power imbalances in the relationship.
- Building partnerships that advocate for others.
Humility vs competence
Competence focuses on knowing about groups. Humility focuses on how you show up with a specific person. They work best together: knowledge gives you hypotheses, humility keeps you from treating them as facts.
Culture shapes habits, not destinies. Every pattern here describes tendencies people often notice, never a rule about the person in front of you.
What it looks like
Asking how someone prefers to be addressed. Saying “I may have this wrong.” Noticing when your role gives you more power in the conversation and making room.
Humility and personality types
The same applies to personality frameworks. A type is a starting point for conversation, not a verdict. Tarock matches compare cards with people you know so you can ask, not assume.
